To be knitting. That, is one of the things which I cherish most. And it has such a long history, too. Most knitters begin with simpler pieces, such as a scarf, or one-color vest. Usually, they keep to a few well-liked patterns, or stitch types, and seldom venture very far from these. To be knitting. That, is one of the things which I cherish most. And it has such a long history, too. Known today as typically a woman’s craft, knitting was originally done by men, shepherds, to be exact, way back when. Even in literature, there are knitters scattered around; the most famous has to be Madame DeFarge in Dicken’s ‘A Tale of Two Cities’. Most knitters begin with simpler pieces, such as a scarf, or one-color vest. Usually, they keep to a few well-liked patterns, or stitch types, and seldom venture very far from these. In this mid-winter time, what with Christmas behind us, and much snow and ice around us, my favorite project of all, comes to mind. Whether you have a real fireplace, or just one playing on your TV, (ala Channel 11, all you New York people know what I mean), nothing goes with your hot chocolate or steaming tea, and that good book, like an afghan. Lap blanket, bed throw, any way you say it, afghans make rooms come alive with personality. Yours. Of course, you can never have enough good afghans around. Eventually they all begin to get ‘old’, or become the dog’s favorite blanket, or the cat’s place to perch, so you can always use a new afghan! Before beginning an afghan project, though, there are considerations that you need to decide on. Just what kind of an afghan are you going to knit? Will you use block patterns or knit in the round? How about yarn color and amount’do you need to learn new stitches or ways of advancing what you already know about your knitting?Other thoughts aside, these fundamental questions should be answered before going forward with a larger project such as knitting an afghan. You know, afghan patterns are all over the place. Not just on the Web, either. Pick up a knitting magazine or book, and ideas will start to fly at you. How cute this one is, or oh, I just love this color, I think I’ll knit this one. A few good pointers when considering knitting an afghan are: A. Decide on a pattern. Simple, right? Wrong! Be sure to check out the “skill level” listed with each pattern; if it says advanced, and you are still a newbie, don’t attempt it! They really do mean what they say, and you will soon find yourself lost in knitting terms and instructions you never knew existed. B. Will you use regular needles or circular ones? I find either/or is fine by me. Some of you have never used circular; they take some getting used to, but hold a large number of stitches. So, if you are planning a pattern that calls for anything over, say, 75 stitches, use a circular needle. C. Which yarn will you use? That’s a biggie! Usually with afghans, I find that the emphasis is on the pattern stitch(es), and by utilizing color, you can turn out a masterpiece with some of the more traditional yarns. I don’t recommend the fun furs, or eyelash yarns for afghans, nor should you use super-bulky either. Unless you don’t mind stiff fingers all the next day!D. What about joining yarns? How does that go again? Incorporating lots of different colors, or just three or four, means knowing the correct way of joining yarns, so as not to make your work look amateurish. So, you see, deciding on knitting an afghan, requires some planning ahead. Next article, we will pick out needles and yarn, and choose some pretty patterns to get us going! In the meantime, finish up those post-holiday projects now. Afghans take some time, but, when they’re done, they are beautiful! Fabric As a beginning cross stitcher, it is best to work with Aida fabric in 11 or 14 count. When starting out, it is important to choose a light colored fabric so the holes will show up more easily. Even experienced cross stitchers understand the difficulties in using dark fabrics and only use them when necessary. Whether a beginner or experienced stitcher, it is important to look for fabric that is rolled, not folded. Folded fabrics can have creases in them that are extremely difficult to get out. Floss Embroidery floss, a thread composed of six loosely-twisted strands, is generally available in cotton, silk or rayon. There are several brands of embroidery floss, including DMC, J & P Coats, and Anchor. The biggest consideration when choosing a brand of floss is its availability in your area, including the selection of colors within each brand in the store. Of course, in these days of ecommerce, brands are available in any color and amount in online stores. Once a brand is decided upon, it is very important to stay with that brand since even a slight color variation will show up in a project. That being said, it is also very important to buy more than enough floss in each color so a project can be finished without buying more. Occasionally a floss maker will need to remake the dye for a batch of floss and will make the new batch with a small square or other symbol next to the floss’ dye lot number. Needles A good needle can make the difference between enjoying a project and hating it since it is the main tool you will be using to do your work. Beyond creating a bad experience, poor quality needles can ruin your work by causing frayed floss, staining from rusting, and pulling. Match the needle to your thread size. The correct-size needle should be only slightly thicker at the eye than the thickness of your thread, making a hole in the fabric that the thread can pass through easily. Match the needle to your fabric and embroidery technique. Sharp-tipped crewel or chenille needles work best for projects requiring you to stitch through the fabric. Blunt-tipped tapestry needles are suitable for stitches worked on fabrics with ready-made holes, such as Aida for cross-stitch. Scissors The most important pair of scissors do not have to be expensive, but they should be sharp enough to cut through floss without fraying it. A small pair is all that’s needed for the small snips needed for floss. The Transportation Security Administration has eased restrictions on scissors so metal scissors with pointed tips and blades shorter than four inches are now allowed, but should be securely wrapped to prevent injury to inspectors making it possible to take embroidery scissors on the plane. If there is a need to cut fabric, it is important to have a pair of scissors that have not been used for any other purpose to ensure that the cut is sharp and clean and that there is no foreign matter like grease transferred to the fabric. Embroidery Hoop While some stitchers prefer to work their fabric by hand, many will opt for the help of an embroidery hoop to keep the area in which they are working taut. Hoops are available in plastic or wood (the vintage metal hoops with cork insides should definitely be avoided!), in many different sizes. Standard, round lap hoops range from four to twelve inches. Floss Organizer While not absolutely necessary, it is a good idea to have a way to keep track of your floss while working on a project. While there are many products available to purchase, in the beginning it is just as easy to punch holes in a sturdy piece of cardboard, write floss number by a hole and secure the corresponding floss in the hole. Great Christmas Gift Ideas to Sew Brother Sewing Machines Online. If things are a bit tight this Christmas, why not drag out the sewing machine and make your own Christmas gifts. It doesn’t have to be a complex piece of clothing. The suggestions below are all simple and easy to make. The biggest cost will be the fabric, so shop around for remnants and discount fabrics. Elegant Table Runner & Placemats When you think about it, the simple table runner is just a long rectangle, and placemats are just smaller ones. If you buy some nice organza or patterned satin material in festive colours, you can whip up a unique and beautiful gift in a matter of minutes. A good size for a table runner is 60″ long by 13″ wide (or 160cm by 34cm). A good size for a placemat is 17½” by 12½” (or 45cm by 32cm). So for 6 placemats and 1 table runner, you’ll need around 2 yards of fabric (2 metres). For each item you will need two pieces of fabric, so fold your fabric in half (right sides together) and draw up your pattern pieces using tailors chalk and a ruler (don’t forget to include a seam allowance). Cut out, then sew together leaving a small gap in each piece (to turn the right way around). Turn right side out and iron (ironing the unfinished seam in place). Now run a seam around the entire outer side as close to the edge as possible. Voila! Ladies Evening Wrap (or Day Wrap Summer evenings are great, but sometimes they can be a little cool. Why not make this easy evening wrap - a quick and easy gift idea for Christmas too! Or, if you have a friend with Lupus, why not make them a daytime wrap so they can be shielded from the sun. Great fabrics for this include silk or shot silk for an evening wrap, and tight weave cheesecloth which blocks the sun but still allows for air circulation for a day wrap. The wrap is 31½“ wide by 63“ long (or 80cm by 160cm). However, our preference would be to have both long edges of the wrap as a selvedge edge, so if you find suitable fabric in a roll with a width just slightly larger than these (say 36″ instead of 31½ “), go ahead and buy it - a little extra width won’t hurt. Before you buy your fabric, you need to decide what embellishment, if any, you want to put on the ends of the wrap. You can leave the edges as just a straight edge, you can attach some fringing or other decorative ribbon, or you can make your own fringe (if you are using a fabric than fringes easily). If you are buying decorative ribbon or fringing, you will need 63″ or 160cm. If you decide to make your own fringe, don’t forget to factor that into how much fabric you will need. An average fringe is 2½“ long (or 7cm), so you will need to buy 31½ “ wide by 68 “ long (or 80cm by 174cm). Then just stitch those edges that need to be stitched. For the sides (if you have to stitch them) I’d use a really tight zigzag stitch (test first on a scrap piece of fabric). For the ends, if you are just hemming, use the same stitch. If you will be attaching ribbon or fringing, sew a normal hem. If you are fringing the wrap yourself, start unpicking the material at one end, and continue until the fringe measures 2½“ long (or 7cm). Now grab bunches of the fringing about 1/4″ wide (1/2cm), and tie in a knot so that the knot is as close the edge of the solid fabric as possible. Repeat every 1/4″ until you have knotted the entire edge. Now repeat with the other end of the wrap. So, start sewing – hopefully these ideas will inspire you!
